Weird and Wonderful Foods of the World

This is a guest post by the food lovers at Corr Chilled. Continue reading to delve into the crazy-cool world of weird and nasty looking food (some which taste delicious, and others no so much).

If you consider yourself to be a little squeamish then this post is probably not your cup of tea. But if you have a little sense of adventure in you yet, prepare to check out some of the world’s strangest delicacies.

Here are some of the weirdest and wonderful dishes, sourced from around the world:

1. Fried tarantula – this is a well known delicacy found in Cambodia but it can also be found in parts of Thailand too. This famous fried tarantula dish is said to be flavored with garlic and herbs for a less terrifying experience but we’re not sure we believe those rumors.

2. Century eggs – these eggs are left to ferment for months in a mixture of clay, ash, salt and lime. Unlike what the name suggests, we promise you that these eggs are not left to rot for over a hundred years, just a hundred days perhaps. These eggs turn black and grey and are served as dim sum in China.

3. Hakarl shark – this is a traditional Icelandic treat (debatable). This ancient delicacy is not kind to the nostrils as the fermented shark pieces create an unforgettable stench. Served in little yellow cubes, this dish is reserved for the braver foodie.

4. Casu Marzu – this Sardinian cheese is both disgusting and dangerous, yet so many Sardinians crave after this dairy delight. Casu Marzu is a famous rotting cheese, served when thriving with maggots. Be careful though – the cheese becomes dangerous when the maggots have died so you need to make sure those little things are still wriggling when you put this in your mouth.

5. Escamoles – considered to be the caviar of the insect world, escamoles are an interesting little luxury in Mexico. These giant ants’ eggs have a similar consistency to cottage cheese and are said to have a lovely, creamy taste. Mmm… 😀

6. Raw blood soup – this is a vampire’s playground. The raw blood soup, also known as Tiet Cahn, is a traditional offering in Viet Nam. The soup is a simple concoction and if you’re brave enough to give this soup a go, you’ll be delighted to know that the ingredients include chicken gizzards and raw blood from a duck. And just for added flavor, your soup will be complemented with crushed peanuts and some lovely herbs.

So what do you think? Are you brave enough to try these weird and wacky dishes?

  1. Wow… I never thought of the century egg as being weird. I guess we’re used to seeing and eating it here in dear old Philippines. Hahaha.

      1. Plenty of places for century eggs. Just come to Ongpin, Binondo where there are places where foodies can go. I can name President Tea House, Hap Chan, Wai Ying and Sincerity as some of the places I haunt every now and then to enjoy noodles, dim sum, oyster omelettes and brewed coffee.
