Moonleaf Tea Shop and Sweet Studio

Who would’ve thought that Filipinos, young and old, would become as addicted to tea as we are now? Credits to the introduction of milk teas to our Pinoy tastebuds, we started to appreciate the wondrous flavors of various teas. We were no longer limited to tea bags as we began to venture out to other tea variants and blends. And if you’re a fan of milk teas, I’m sure you’ve heard about Moonleaf Tea Shop.

Moonleaf Tea Shop Milk Teas - hot and cold

I have to admit, I’ve been loyal to one milk tea shop for the longest time. Ken and I have tried other milk tea shops and we see ourselves returning to that familiar place all the time. So it was definitely about time I found Moonleaf.

Xin Tian Di Chinese Restaurant at Crowne Plaza Manila

It’s been awhile since Ken and I last ate at a Chinese restaurant together. I think the last time was when we went on our DIY Binondo food tour (which we’ll be blogging about very soon!) last year. So when we were invited to check out Xin Tian Di restaurant at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, we gladly accepted.

Xin Tian Di at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila in Ortigas

Located on the fourth floor of the hotel, Xin Tian Di is Crowne Plaza’s signature Chinese restaurant. Aside from a menu of Chinese dishes, they also offer various Asian cuisines such as Indonesian, Singaporean, Szechuan and Nonya (Peranakan). Upon entering the restaurant, you’d feel the welcoming ambiance of the whole place, from their friendly staff up until their comfy chairs and tables.

Inside Xin Tian Di restaurant in Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila

I love the colors and the interiors altogether, offering a very warm atmosphere and good acoustics, making Xin Tian Di a perfect venue for business meetings or get-together with your friends or family.

Xin Tian Di Dim Sum Unlimited and Yum Cha

Before we go to what we had for dinner, let me tell you first about one of their famous offerings: unlimited dim sum.

Xin Tian Di’s Dim Sum Unlimited is available now during lunch (11:30am-2:30pm) where you get to choose from over fifty (50) dim sum for only Php 1,188 nett per person. The Dim Sum Unlimited menu includes appetizers, entrees and desserts, so you can enjoy a complete meal for that price.

And good news for all you morning people! Starting on July 14, 2013, that’s this Sunday, Xin Tian Di will start offering a breakfast edition of their unlimited dim sum – their Yum Cha promo, which will be available from 7am til 10am. For the price of Php 588++, you’d get to choose among 36 varieties of dim sum, and even includes rice, congee, noodle, dessert and house tea.

These are awesome deals you shouldn’t miss, especially if you feel like hoarding some dim sum over breakfast or lunch. 😉 Oh, and make sure to check out Deal Grocer since I’ve seen them offering deals there. A few months ago, I bought vouchers for dinner at 7 Corners (will blog soon!), Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila’s other restaurant.

Sugarleaf Organic Market and Cafe : Haven for Health Buffs

For us who grew up enjoying savory dishes and sweet desserts, the mere mention of healthful food gives us this impression of bland, sacrificial eating. And we think this is normal since our brains and bodies were mostly programmed to relish anything with salt or sugar. However, through this blog and our desire to be healthier, we’ve started to go out of our ways to discover more nourishing yet flavorful food, and we found one of the must-go places for health buffs: Sugarleaf Organic Market and Cafe.

Sugarleaf - Foods that nourish

We were invited for lunch in Sugarleaf at their Medicard Lifestyle Center branch in Makati. It was the first time we felt genuinely excited to learn more about how to eat well… and smarter. 🙂 That nutritious lunch forever changed our perceptions of what healthful food tastes like. Thanks to Angelo “Jello” Narciso Songco, co-owner of Sugarleaf, who shared with us his passion for healthful eating.

We are well aware that by just changing your diet, you can drastically improve your health. Food can be medicine, or our poison. But, we’re not here to preach about health since we love bacon, desserts and chocolates. 😀 We just want to share this with you so you know your options. 🙂

Sugarleaf Garden Greens Salad with various dressings to choose from

When it comes to healthful food, we usually think we have to compromise flavor – this has been instilled in us, not just here in the Philippines, but everywhere in the world. We have this impression that only food products and dishes that have actual sugar, pork fats / oils, and salt can be tasty. We have learned over the years that there are other more healthful alternatives.

Wee Nam Kee Yellow Chicken Festival and Other Scrumptious Dishes

For a limited time only (til June 30th, but hopefully they’ll extend or make this a regular item), Wee Nam Kee is serving up the Wagyu, Kobe and Kurobuta of chicken – the imported Yellow Chicken from Malaysia.

Wee Nam Kee Yellow Chicken roasted and steamed or Hainanese

You might have heard about Wee Nam Kee’s Yellow Chicken and thought it’s just a fancy, overrated version of the regular poultry we enjoy. When they invited us to get a taste of this, along with other Wee Nam Kee dishes, we can guarantee that it’s far from your ordinary chicken.

McDonald’s McSpicy, Big N Tasty, and Black and White Burgers

We have yet to blog about so many things we’ve enjoyed the past year, and it was only now that McDonald’s launched a new burger – the McSpicy Chicken Burger – that I finally got to writing about how much we love their Big N’ Tasty, which was launched a year ago.

McDonald's McSpicy Chicken Burger[2]

For years, there has only been one fast food chain that delivers 24/7 to our area here in Malabon City – the McDonald’s branch in Concepcion (google-map it!). Though this is mainly the reason why I’ve collected a stash of ketchup sachets from McDo (no shame), they have been our go-to place for midnight snacks. And since I work at night and the stress from my job makes me want to eat past 12 midnight, I can no longer count how many times we’ve had food from McDo delivered here. They don’t even call or verify anymore and the delivery guys already know us. 😀

7-Election Campaign by 7-Eleven : Until May 6th Only!

I remember back in 2010, during the presidential elections, 7-Eleven launched an unofficial yet fun voting campaign through specially-designed Gulp® cups. I participated then so when I found out they’re doing it again, I wanted to join in too.

2013 7-Election Campaign Gulp cups

This time around, the 7-Election campaign is focused on the senatorial coalitions. Instead of voting individually, customers can choose from three (3) Gulp® cups with designs representing Team PNoy, United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) and the independent candidates and smaller parties.

Since the voting is not for a specific candidate but for his or her whole party, I had a difficult time choosing a cup. As much as I’d like to share my political views here, I know this food blog is not the proper forum so I’d rather just invite you to participate as you still have time. 😉

A Tasty Shift to Wine

Keep calm and drink wineI remember distinctly when I first had a taste of wine. It was during a New Year’s Eve celebration from years ago and I recall hating its taste and how I felt after. However, over time, my palate broadened, especially when we started this food blog. My love for wine though came 2 years after.

I currently handle social media for restaurants based in the US. And if you’re not aware yet, Americans are big on drinking wine with their meals. I’ve always wondered about what it is about wines that they loved so much. Since my work somehow forced me to learn more about wine, I read articles upon articles about it. Eventually, the interest grew.

I took an online wine course to help me understand wine better. It was for work. Though it didn’t completely hook me in, I got quite interested to buy my first bottle of wine ever. It was a scary thought, fearing I’d be encountering snobs who’ll laugh at a wine novice like I am.

After that first bottle of Merlot I bought, a 2010 Louis Chatel Merlot, I started to understand why people loved drinking wine. Aside from the obvious reason that it’s alcoholic and can help loosen you up 😀 , I experienced firsthand how wines enhance the flavors of various dishes. The rule “red for meats, white for seafood” was the only one I kept in mind. But, I’ve broken this rule many times and still found myself enjoying every sip of my wine selections. Oh, and wines make you happy, based on my experience. 😉 And they’re good for the heart too.

Last year, when we got invited to a short wine class at The Wine Museum (which I haven’t blogged about yet – sheesh. Boo to backlogs), imagine my excitement. 😉 Though I already know everything they said, it was good to learn that there are wine experts here in my country who are more than welcoming to encourage us Filipinos to start drinking and enjoying wine over spirits. I’ll be writing a more in-depth post about wine appreciation very soon, so stay tuned for that.

Wine tasting at The Wine Museum

Over the past year, I’ve tasted various wines and I loved each of them. It’s now my choice of drink when I need a good ol’ drink at home or at a restaurant that serves wine by the glass. Right now, I’m loving these Chilean Merlot (right, pictured below), which I highly recommend for newbies to wine. They’re fruity and light.

Chilean wines

Hardys - wines from AustraliaI especially love the Frontera Merlot. It was so tasty, I think I finished it off in (less than) 2 days. 😀 If there’s one wine I’d buy a case of, this will be probably it. Or Hardys Chardonnay. You’ll need to chill it a bit through your freezer / chiller or a wine cooler maybe from online stores or a local wine store as white wines taste better when they’re chilled. Red wines are best poured at room temperature, FYI. 🙂

Right now, I’m sticking with these Chilean wines, but I might try a new bottle of Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon from California next time.

How about you? What wines have you tried and enjoyed so far? Share below! 🙂

Quench Your Thirst with J.CO Beverages + New Donuts to Love!

We gushed and told you how much we love J.CO donuts. It’s not just about how yummy their donuts are, but it’s more on the creativity behind each flavor they offer. So, it was not surprising that they’re maintaining this level of uniqueness with their beverage concoctions. J.CO Donuts and Coffee is here to prove that, truly, they’re not your usual donut place. 🙂

The delicious delights of J.CO Wonderland

Excited to try their beverages and the other donut flavors I haven’t tasted yet, my nanay and I trooped to their nearest branch – Trinoma. There was a long line of people inside, which, quite frankly, discouraged me. There were about 15 people in front of me and it took about 45 minutes to an hour before I finally got my turn. Everyone was ordering like 2-3 dozens each! 😀

Sadly, many of the donut flavors and the beverages I wanted initially were no longer available when I got to the counter. So, I opted to order their Iced Thai Tea. Good thing I was able to convince my nanay to try the Cafe Avocado. I wanted the Cappuccino Avocado, but for some reason, it wasn’t available.

Iced Thai Tea and Cafe Avocado from J.CO Donuts and Coffee

Anyway, if you think that the combination of avocado, coffee and chocolate is plain weird, you’d be surprised. It was delightful! Made me wish they were still serving Cappuccino Avocado when we were there ’cause I’m sure it’ll have a more intense kick of avocado. We’ll come back next time for that, probably on a weekday when there’s a shorter queue.

A Sweet Start to My Day, Thanks to Splenda

I work full time at night and one of the many things I enjoy is a cup (or two) of coffee to perk me up so I can fulfill all my tasks more efficiently. Since I work online and I’m in front of the computer for 7-8 hours straight, even with my current routine of exercising 30-45 minutes per day before my shift, I know I have to control my calorie and carbohydrate intake because I don’t get to move as often as other people who work in an actual office and commute on a daily basis.

Perk me up with coffee and Splenda No Calorie Sweetener

I used to like my coffee black and bitter, but lately, I see myself adding at least a tablespoon of sugar to a regular cup of coffee, and about 2-3 teaspoons when I opt for the 3-in-1 blends. If you add that up in a week, that’s a lot of sugar, which is not good for my low calorie, less carbohydrate diet (I’m trying to eat healthier at home).

Conversion chart at the back of box of Splenda No Calorie Sweetener

Thankfully, there’s Splenda No Calorie Sweetener. The content of each packet of Splenda is equivalent to 2 teaspoons of sugar, but it has none of the calories. On the box, there’s a conversion chart that should guide you. Yes, you read that right. The good thing about using Splenda is it sweetens my coffee without the calories and carbohydrates I usually get from sugar, making me enjoy my cup of coffee, even twice a day, with less guilt. 😉
